We all know about the normal routine maintenance that comes with owning a vehicle, such as oil changes, brake checks, and tire rotations, but don't forget about changing out your cabin air filter.

What is an AC filter?

Like any air conditioner your vehicle's cabin air filter gets dusty and dirty. The filter is designed to block out any dust, pollen, and other airborne pollutants that you may drive through. This helps you to not only have cleaner air in the cabin, which is helpful for those that have respiratory issues or allergies, but it also reduces any foul smelling odors that may come through.

When should I get my AC filter changed?

There are two signs that your filter needs to be replaced: odor and air flow. If you notice that there is a musty odor coming from your AC this could be a sign that your filter is clogged with a lot of dirt and grime. Do you turn your air on and hear a lot of noise, but not much air is coming out? Your filter may be so dirty that air flow is being affected. Both of these can be fixed by simply replacing the air filter with a fresh and clean one.

Each vehicle also has a different suggested time that the air filter should be checked and/or replaced. To find your car's recommended mileage take a look at its owner's manual.

How do I change my AC filter?

Some vehicles make it relatively easy to change out the AC filter while others have placed it in a more difficult area. You can purchase a filter at any parts store and try to switch it out yourself or you can bring your vehicle into a service department to have a technician take care of it.
